The Nonius (in Hungarian; Noniusz) is a Hungarian horse breed. It is generally dark in color, a muscular breed, and strong boned. It was originally bred to serve as a light, utility draft horse for the Hungarian military. A decline in the use of horses in Hungary after the war sent many members of the breed to the slaughterhouse. Today the breed is bred by conservationists and used in agriculture, horseback riding, and competitive driving sports.
