A massive theropod dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of Argentina. It was scientifically described in 2022 based on a remarkably complete skeleton. Meraxes is believed to have been between 10 and 11 meters long. The upper part of the skull and the snout featured bony crests that are thought to have indicated maturity and played a role in social signaling. Its short forelimbs support the hypothesis that many dinosaurs related to Meraxes had reduced forelimbs, similar to those seen in other apex predators such as tyrannosaurs. The fossil material associated with this genus is believed to represent a dinosaur between 39 and 53 years old, making it one of the oldest non-avian theropods described to date. The genus name refers to a dragon from George R. R. Martins *A Song of Ice and Fire*, the novel series that inspired the popular television series *Game of Thrones*.
