The heavily armored South American herbivorous glyptodon Doedicurus, which lived during the Pleistocene and Holocene periods 2 million to 8,000-7,000 years ago joins the Prehistoric Animals series. The animal was related to present-day armadillos, sloths and anteaters and had an average total length of about 3.6 m. It had an unusually shaped carapace and a bony club tail that may have been used in judgments between males or in defense against predators such as Smilodon.
